5 Yoga Exercise for the Eyes

Eyes need to be taken care of as they are an essential part of one’s body. Yoga helps to maintain good eye-sight. One can practice these yoga exercises to protect one’s eyes.
Yoga asanas do improve the functioning of the eyes. And one can overcome various eye-related problems like short-sightedness and long-sightedness. Eye, eye care, yoga for eyes is worth undertaking.

Diseases other than glaucoma and cataract occur due to bacterial infections and several eye disorders are related to the malfunctioning of the ocular muscles that may occur due to chronic mental and emotional tension. Yoga techniques for the eyes do help alleviate disorders such as myopia and hypermetropia that are indeed caused due to defects in the eye muscles.

Just blink – yoga exercises for your eyes:

Some of the yoga exercises are as simple as blinking, and yet so powerful. People tend to forget blinking when browsing long hours on electronic devices. Simple exercises such as blinking can make the eyes healthier and stronger.

Near and distant viewing:

Regular practice of these yoga eye exercises does help to relax eyesight and facilitate the normal functioning of our eyes.

Palming

• Sit quietly with the eyes closed and take a few deep breaths to relax.
• Rub the palms of the hands vigorously until they become warm and then place the palms gently over the eyelids
• Feel the warmth of the palms being transferred onto one’s eyes and the eye muscles relaxing. The eyes are being bathed in soothing darkness
• Stay in this position until the heat from the hands has been completely absorbed by the eyes
• Keeping the eyes closed, lower the hands
• Once again rub the palms and then repeat the process at least three times

Blinking

• Sit comfortably with one’s eyes open
• Blink around 10 times very quickly
• Close the eyes and relax for 20 seconds while taking one’s attention to one’s breath
• Repeat this exercise about five times. Eye, eye care, yoga for eyes does involve such exercises.

Sideways viewing

• Sit with legs straight in front of the body
• Now lift the arms keeping the fist closed as well as the thumbs pointing upward
• Look at a point straight in front of oneself in level with the eyes
• Keep the head in this fixed position and focus on the following one after the other, by shifting your vision to the:

o Space between the eyebrows
o Left thumb
o Space between the eyebrows
o Right thumb
o Space between the eyebrows
o Left thumb
Repeat this exercise 10 to 20 times
After completing this exercise, close the eyes and rest
Keep a track of the breathing pattern while performing the above exercise.

• Inhale in a neutral position
• Exhale while looking to the side
• Inhale and come back to the center

Front and sideways viewing

• Sit with legs straight in front of the body
• Now, close the left fist and place it on the left knee thus ensuring that the thumb points upwards
• Look at a point straight in front of oneself and in level with one’s eyes
• Keep the head fixed in this position
• Breathing out, focus the eyes on the left thumb
• Breathing in, focus the eyes at a point in front of oneself and in level with one’s eyes
• Repeat the same process with the right thumb
• Close one’s eyes and rest

Rotational viewing

• Sit with legs straight in front of one’s body
• Place the left hand on the left knee
• Hold the right fist above the right knee, with the thumb pointing upwards. Keep the elbow straight

• Now keeping the head still, focus your eyes on the thumb
• Make a circle with the thumb, keeping the elbow straight
• Repeat this exercise five times each in the clockwise and anti-clockwise direction
• Repeat the process with the left thumb
• Close your eyes and rest
