While we would all like to live in denial on this issue, aging and wrinkles are, unfortunately, an inevitable part of life. Chances are, you already know that too much sun is a primary aging accelerator, but what you ignore is that some foods (even seemingly harmless) can have the same effect.

1. Flavored Yogurt

Regarding our daily sugar dose, less comes from foods like cookies and donuts than you might think. A lot of things are hidden in places less evocative like bread, turkey and you, you guessed it, yogurt! Yoplait’s original flavor yogurt line, for example, contains more than 25 grams of sugar in each 6-ounce container.

It’s more sugar than you’ll find in a whole bag of chocolate black chocolate M & MíS! When we consume sweet things, it connects amino acids to collagen and elastin (proteins that keep the skin firm, supple and youthful) and breaks them down. The result: the skin becomes less elastic and begins to sag. Need another reason to reduce? According to a 2010 study on dermatology clinics, sugar exacerbates the effects of UV aging of the sun! Yikes!

After being digested, the carbohydrates break down into pure sugar, which, as we know, causes EFAs. But not all fuels are created equal. Fruits and vegetables are carbohydrates and many of them have incredible nutritional properties that can actually prevent wrinkles. So, totally avoiding carbohydrates to avoid wrinkles would actually detrimentally affect the health of your skin.

Instead, avoid very refined and processed carbohydrates, which have few nutritional benefits and can harm the skin. Ideally, to aid prevent the wrinkles, end concentrated sources of carbohydrates, such as bagels (50 grams of carbohydrates each), pastries, breakfast cereals, muffins, white bread, cookies, and cakes. Focus on consuming healthy and less processed carbohydrates that provide nutrients that improve the appearance of the skin. Base your diet around whole grains, fruits, and vegetables – all carbohydrates, but also contain antioxidants and vitamins that reduce wrinkles.

6. Margarine

For a long time, margarine was considered a better choice than butter because of its lower saturated fat content. But that was before we learned the detrimental effects of polyunsaturated fats found in margarine. People who regularly consumed margarine had more wrinkles than those who ate less margarine.

This may be related to the type of fat found in margarine, which tends to increase inflammation, resulting in increased oxidative stress. Uncontrolled oxidative stress damages all organs of the body, including the skin. Therefore, inflammation not only increases your risk of disease, but it also causes damage to the skin, resulting in a dry, dull appearance and wrinkle formation. Avoid margarine & opt for little amounts of real butter rather. Better still, the top loaf with some type of nut butter, which will give you the right types of fats for healthy skin.

7. Dairy

Although dairy products give calcium – the critical mineral for bone health & muscle function – they even tend to improve inflammation, causing the improvement in oxidative stress, one of the causes of premature aging. Dairy products are also high in milk sugar, called lactose, which can increase the formation of AGE, causing collagen damage.

Instead, try to get your calcium from other sources, like green leafy vegetables or alternatives to milk. It is good to eat a little Greek low-sugar yogurt here and there, but be sure to read the label and compare the products to find the lowest option in sugar.
