Gingivitis- a common dental disease

Gingivitis- a common dental disease is gum disease caused by bacteria. It is quite common infection if proper oral hygiene is not maintained. It is a very mild condition which can be treated very easily in a simple way but it can cause severe damage if left untreated. A serious disorder called periodontal disease which leads to loss of teeth can occur if not treated soon. Gums become swollen red and bleed easily.

Bacteria are omnipresent. They are even on our body and inside our body. Mouth has a large amount of bacteria residing. It is an ideal place which has favorable conditions like warm and continuous supply of food. If oral hygiene is not maintained the bacteria may cause severe damage to oral health. Since mouth is the gateway for the rest of the body care should be taken care.

Gingivitis may also occur due to the following reasons

  • Family history
  • Diabetes
  • Hormonal changes during menopauseGingivitis- a common dental disease
  • Smoking or drinking
  • Poor immune system
  • Medication and use of drugs

Signs and symptoms

  • Swollen gums
  • Change of the gum colour from pink to red
  • Bleeding easily when brushing or flossing
  • Sore pain
  • Bad breath

Treatment and prevention

Treatment includes using of antibiotics tablets or creams that can be applied directly to the gums.

Using antiseptic and plague removal mouth wash helps to wash off the bacteria

Gingivitis can be prevented by maintaining oral hygiene like brushing teeth daily twice, removing any food particles after each meal by gurgling, visiting dentist periodically. Having a balanced diet too helps the gums and teeth to be in good condition.
